Storage Unit Size Guide

Choosing the right storage unit can feel overwhelming—how much space do you really need? Go too small, and you might end up cramming everything in a way that’s frustrating to access. Go too big, and you’re paying for extra space you don’t use.

An appropriately sized self-storage unit allows you to store your belongings efficiently, keep everything organized, and access what you need without hassle. Whether you’re storing a few seasonal decorations, an entire home’s worth of furniture, or business inventory, the right storage space makes all the difference.

This Storage Unit Size Guide helps you visualize what will fit inside each unit, so you can confidently pick the perfect space for your needs.

About Storage Unit Sizes

Small Storage Units (5’x5’ to 7.5’x10’)

These compact units are great for those who need just a little extra space — whether it’s seasonal decorations, sports gear, or important business documents. They’re also ideal for individuals in transition, like college students storing belongings between semesters.

Medium Storage Units (10’x10’ to 10’x20’)

If you’re moving or decluttering, medium units are the sweet spot. They can fit the contents of a small home or apartment, making them perfect for storing furniture, appliances, and larger household items. Business owners also love these for keeping extra inventory and supplies.

Large Storage Units (10’x25’ and up)

For those with a big move or long-term storage needs, large units provide enough room for multiple rooms of furniture, large appliances, and even vehicles. They’re also great for businesses that need secure, accessible storage for equipment and inventory.

Tips for Maximizing Storage Space

1. Smart Placement Matters

Put items you won’t need often toward the back or bottom and things you’ll want to access regularly up front. That way, you’re not digging through everything when you need something quick.

2. Label Everything & Keep It Organized

Clearly mark each box and group similar items together—for example, stack all kitchen boxes in one section and keep all seasonal decorations together. This will save you time and frustration later. Learn more about How to Organize Your Storage Unit.

3. Use Vertical Space to Your Advantage

Stack boxes high (as long as they’re sturdy), and consider using industrial shelving for things you’ll need often. If storing furniture, try standing it on its side instead of laying it flat—this saves a ton of room! Thinking vertically isn’t just smart for storage units either; building “up” within a small home or studio apartment makes a big difference as well.

Storage Unit Size Guide FAQs

How do I know what size unit I need?

Start by making a list of what you’ll store and measure how much space those items take up. If you’re unsure, visiting a storage facility in person can help you visualize what will fit.

If your unit is too small, you may struggle to fit everything inside safely or have trouble accessing items later. It’s better to slightly size up if you’re unsure—especially if you plan on adding more items over time.

It’s always a good idea to get storage insurance to protect the items that you’re storing. Learn more about storage insurance.

A good rule of thumb is to measure your biggest items first, then consider how many boxes or bins you’ll be stacking. If your belongings currently fill a moving truck, you’ll typically need a unit size that matches the truck size (for example, a 15-foot moving truck often fits into a 10’x15’ unit).

We offer fenced premises with gated access, surveillance cameras, daily property walk-throughs and lock checks so you can store with confidence.

We do our best to keep our storage facilities clean, pest-free, and well-lit, so your belongings stay in top shape! We also have on-site facility managers so don’t hesitate to reach out if you ever have any concerns.

As long or short as you need! You can rent your storage unit month-to-month or long-term—whatever works best for your needs and situation.
